What Is Dysport

Dysport® is a Prescription Medicine containing 500 units of protein taken from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. The protein has been used to treat a range of motor disorder and neuro-muscular disorders. In New Zealand, Dysport® now has registration approval under the Medicines Act for the treatment of frown lines that appear between the eyebrows.

Tiny amounts of Dysport® are injected directly into the facial muscles underlying the frown lines. It usually takes three to five small, almost painless injections between the eyebrows.

Over the next few days, the muscles gradually relax. Dysport® will restrict the degree of contraction of your frown muscles, but you will still blink and raise your eyebrows as normal, it will look totally natural.

On some occasions, treatment can caused unwanted effects. This does not happen very often. The most common effects are temporary soreness or mild bruising around the treatment site. Some guests may experience a slight headache that lasts for several hours after treatment. In a very small percentage of cases, there can be a complication called ‘ptosis’ (a dropping eyelid) which may last a few days or up to four weeks. Rarely, an allergic reaction can cause skin rash or flu-like symptoms. You should not have Dysport® treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or at all if you have a neuromuscular disease.

You will need to pay for this medicine and the doctor’s consultation. Discuss with your specialist if Dysport® is right for you.
