Dental Hygiene

Did you know that there are more bacteria in your mouth than practically any other part of the body? Although not all of them cause problems, failing to maintain great oral hygiene can seriously affect your health, well-being and attractiveness to others. That’s because poor oral health can cause cavities, bad breath and gum/bone disease. It can even cause more serious problems such as heart disease.

Maintaining great oral health is your surest way to look better, feel better and be better.

Having a healthy mouth starts at home. Brushing thoroughly at least twice a day (ideally with an electric toothbrush) and daily flossing (a water pick is fantastic if you don’t like using floss) will get your mouth off to a great start. But it is often impossible to remove all plaque and harmful bacteria, which is why it is a good idea to visit our hygienist twice a year. They will:

  • Get rid of plaque and tartar build-up
  • Guide you through an oral health routine that best suits your lifestyle
  • Recommend the safest products to use

Most of the bad bacteria in plaque hate oxygen, which is why we were New Zealand’s first dental practise to use ozonated water for all aspects of dental care. Ozone is highly effective in killing bacteria yet it is 100% safe and natural.

FRESH BREATH

Is your breath as fresh as it could be? Nobody wants to have bad breath (halitosis)! It’s a common problem that affects people of all ages.

Although there are a number of reasons why people get bad breath, many cases are caused by oral health issues such as tooth decay, leaking fillings, gum disease, tartar and having a dry mouth.

Most commercial mouth rinses only mask the smell temporarily, or kill just a few of the bad bacteria, which soon return. Many of these rinses make matters worse in the long run by having ingredients that dry up the mouth.

If you have frequent or constant bad breath then there is no need to suffer from this embarrassing problem because we can help!

You can also help yourself by:

  • Cutting back on caffeine and alcohol
  • Drinking more water
  • Chewing xylitol gum between meals
  • Stopping or cutting down on smoking
  • Brushing, flossing and using a tongue scraper to gently clean your tongue
  • Avoiding alcohol-based, acidic mouth rinses
  • Using alkaline, safe, alcohol free and chemical-free oral care products
